Library Instruction primarily services Saginaw Valley State University's students and faculty. However, we welcome and invite local-area high schools to schedule a research skills class focused on a junior-senior level high school research assignment. Please contact me and I will be happy to customize a session to meet your specific needs. For more information, contact Kathleen Kroll, Reference & Instruction Librarian, at email@example.com or at 989.964.7054.
Scheduling a Session
Please complete the "High School Library Request Form" or call Kathleen Kroll at 989-964-7054 or email kmkroll(at)svsu.edu to schedule a session, at least two-weeks in advance of your planned date of arrival. Please note that during regular semester hours, only Friday sessions are available for high school visits. A confirmation of your scheduled session will be emailed to the requesting teacher within 24-hours of receipt of request. A typical session includes a 30-minute tour of the library, approximately 30-45 minute explanation of: Library of Congress classification and call numbers, Classic Catalog (the library's online catalog) and MelCat, and a hands-on demonstration of one or two subscription databases and a brief overview of the Mel databases. The session works well if focused around a class assignment and therefore, is structured to meet the research needs of the students. Students should come prepared with a research topic in mind or in process.
Those seeking to check out materials from Zahnow Library must be 18 years of age and have photographed identification (e.g., a valid Michigan drivers' license). A total of 20 books may be checked out for three weeks, renewable once online. Videos, Reference books, magazines and journals do not circulate. Remote access to library databases is not available, except to those databases supplied by MeL, the Michigan Electronic Library. For further information, please contact the Circulation Desk at 989-964-4240.
- Please make advance arrangements with the Reference & Instruction Librarian if you wish to print. We may not be able to accommodate this request.
- Students may bring an external drive (jump drive/flash drive) to save their research.
