AI Literacy

How Do You Cite AI?

If you used an AI tool when writing your research paper, it’s important to cite it properly. Here’s how to do it:

1. APA Style (7th Edition)

In APA, treat the AI tool as a piece of software.

In-Text Citation Example:

  • If you refer to something from an AI tool, cite it like this: (AI Tool Developer, Year).

    Example: (OpenAI, 2024).

Reference List Entry:

  • AI Tool Developer. (Year). Tool Name (Version information if available) [Type of tool]. URL.

Example: OpenAI. (2024). ChatGPT (November 18, 2024 version) [Large language model]. https://chat.openai.com

In-Text Use Example:

  • "AI literacy can help students learn better" (OpenAI, 2024).

Source: APA Style

2. MLA Style (9th Edition)

In MLA, cite the AI tool like you would cite an online source.

In-Text Citation Example:

  • Simply put the developer’s name in parentheses: (AI Tool Developer).

    Example: (OpenAI)

Works Cited Entry:

  • AI Tool Developer. Tool Name, version if available, URL.

Example: OpenAI. ChatGPT, version of November 18, 2024, https://chat.openai.com.

Direct Quote Example:

  • According to ChatGPT, "AI can assist with generating new ideas for assignments" (OpenAI).

3. Chicago Style (17th Edition)

Chicago style often uses footnotes or endnotes.

Footnote Example:

  • AI Tool Developer, Tool Name, version if available, URL.

Example: OpenAI, ChatGPT, version of November 18, 2024, https://chat.openai.com.

Bibliography Entry:

  • AI Tool Developer. Tool Name. Version if available. URL.

Example: OpenAI. ChatGPT. Version of November 18, 2024. https://chat.openai.com.
