The Children's Literature Collection has over 11,000 titles! It contains both fictional and non-fictional (sometimes called informational) books. We also have print and ebooks.
The books in the fiction section of the collection have call numbers that start with one of the following: Y1, Y2, Y3, Y4, or YA1. These do not correlate to grade or reading level. They correspond more to format.
Books in the non-fiction section have a call number that starts with either YN or YB1.
NOTE: Because non-fiction can be very difficult for young students, some non-fiction books that present more as traditional picture books are in the Y1 section.
Fiction section call numbers
Example: This beach is loud by Samantha Cotterill - Y1 .C673th
Y1 = This is a picture book. .C673 = An alpha-numerical representation of the author's last name. Th = The first two letters of the title of the book.
All books are arranged in call number order guided by the author's last name, so a book with Y1 .C673th will be before Y1 .C673wr. it will also be before Y1 .R56mr.
Non-fiction section call numbers
Our non-fiction section uses the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) system as it's organizational rule. The DDC Is a subject-based system which uses numbers to represent subjects.
DDC Divisions
After the DDC number in the call number, the books are arranged by author's last name.
Example: Fraction frenzy: fractions and decimals by Rob Colson - YN513.26 .C65fr
YN = Non-fiction book 513.26 = DDC number for fractions .C65 = Alpha-numeric representation of the author's last name Fr= First two letters of the title.
