Zahnow Library - Library Instruction Services: High School Instruction Request

by Kathleen Kroll. This guide will inform you about library instruction services at Zahnow Library. It also includes the library instruction request form.

Library Instruction for High School Groups

Overview

Library Instruction primarily services Saginaw Valley State University's students and faculty. However, we welcome and invite local-area high schools to schedule a research skills class focused on a junior-senior level high school research assignment. Please contact me and I will be happy to customize a session to meet your specific needs. For more information, contact Scott Mellendorf, Head of Research Services, at mel@svsu.edu or at 989.964.7052.

Scheduling a Session

Please complete the "High School Library Request Form" or call Scott Mellendorf at 989-964-7052 or email mel(at)svsu.edu to schedule a session, at least two-weeks in advance of your planned date of arrival. Please note that during regular semester hours, only Friday sessions are available for high school visits. A confirmation of your scheduled session will be emailed to the requesting teacher within 24-hours of receipt of request. A typical session includes a 30-minute tour of the library, approximately 30-45 minute explanation of: Library of Congress classification and call numbers, Classic Catalog (the library's online catalog) and MelCat, and a hands-on demonstration of one or two subscription databases and a brief overview of the Mel databases. The session works well if focused around a class assignment and therefore, is structured to meet the research needs of the students. Students should come prepared with a research topic in mind or in process.

Circulation Policies

Those seeking to check out materials from Zahnow Library must be 18 years of age and have photographed identification (e.g., a valid Michigan drivers' license). A total of 20 books may be checked out for three weeks, renewable once online. Videos, Reference books, magazines and journals do not circulate. Remote access to library databases is not available, except to those databases supplied by MeL, the Michigan Electronic Library.
