TE 311: Literacy Beginnings

Options

Children's literature has worked to reflect more of society in the last 20 years. Here are some options for your classroom library that can allow a variety of students to see themselves in books.

Fairy Tales with a Twist

Many authors have adapted fairy tales to be placed in different cultures. Examples of this is include The three little tamales by Kevin Kimmel, Alice in a winter wonderland by Jan Brett, and Cendrillon: a Caribbean Cinderella by Robert D. San Souci.

Youth Media Awards Winners

The Youth Media Awards are handed out every January and include awards given by various Round Tables within the American Library Association that honor depictions of various cultures. These include the following: Pura Belpre Awards (Latinx), Coretta Scott King Awards (African American), Schneider Family Book Awards (Disabilities), Stonewall Book Awards (LGBTQ), American Indian Youth Literature Awards, Asian Pacific American Awards, and the Sydney Taylor Awards (Jewish).
