TE 311: Literacy Beginnings

Considerations when picking a DEI read aloud

The lists included below have types of materials would be ideal for inclusion in the DEI Read Aloud assignment. When picking a title, consider what DEI stands for. (D=Diversity, E=Equity, and I= Inclusion) These ideas can be reflected in everything from the setting, the creators, the characters, and more. Remember to also consider that DEI can include ethnicity, language, locations, disabilities, etc. You can also refer to the awards winners lists contained in the "Reflecting society in your classroom library" page.

(NOTE: Some of the following book lists contain books meant for older readers than those TE 311 focuses on. Please double check the recommended for grade level in each book list.)

Book lists are updated throughout the year. Some titles may be removed to add new titles on to the list. It is suggested you make a note of a book you might like to use when you see it as the title might be replaced in upcoming iterations of the book list.
