Finding Scholarly and Peer Reviewed Journals: Finding scholarly articles in databases

This guide will assist you in locating scholarly and peer reviewed journals.

One way to locate scholarly journals and journal articles is to use a scholarly database.  The library has many subject databases that include scholarly material.  The library's general or multisubject databases also contain a substantial amount of scholarly material. Some library databases contain only scholarly materials. A few of these are:

Some of the library’s databases will allow you to limit your search to scholarly journals. When you enter your search term(s), you can check the Peer Reviewed boxes and run your search with confidence that results will be from peer reviewed journals.  The image below is from an EBSCO database, CINAHL.

Notice that Peer Reviewed is circled.  Some EBSCO databases allow for both of these limiters.  Others may only allow Peer Reviewed as a limiter.

KEEP IN MIND THAT PEER REVIEWED JOURNALS ALSO CONTAIN INFORMATION THAT IS NOT PEER REVIEWED -- book reviews, letters to the editor, short commentary and editorial commentary are not peer reviewed.

Many other databases have similar search features.  Please ask a Research Center Librarian for assistance in searching for scholarly and peer-reviewed titles.
