FY2016 Chat Assessment Report: Demographic and Usage Information

This guide contains the data and analysis of the FY 2016 survey that was sent to patrons that utilized the Melvin J. Zahnow Library’s chat service during that time period.

Why did you use live chat over calling or visiting the library to seek assistance?

Analysis

Majority of the survey respondents were female, with only 9% of respondents being male. 52% of the respondents were between the ages of 18 and 25. The second highest age range was 40 to 49, with 17% of respondents fitting into that category. 

65% of the respondents to the survey identified as SVSU Undergraduate Students. 0% are graduate students and 22% are SVSU Faculty members. Community members made up 9% of respondents to the survey and SVSU Staff members were 4% of the respondents. 

In this section of the survey, respondents are asked about why they used the live chat service. The answers to this question will be used by the library to learn what appeals to patrons about the live chat service.  

Most of the respondents said that they used the chat service because they thought that it was convenient to use and they needed help from a librarian. Some mentioned that they either weren’t aware of being able to call the library or that they do not like to make phone calls.
