Metadata and Cataloging Unit: Resources

The Metadata and Catalog Unit provides access to all library materials for students, faculty, and staff of SVSU. The unit codes bibliographic information of every item to allow the patrons the easiest experience in finding their desired resources.

The following links are used daily by Metadata and Catalog Unit staff.


These Listservs are great sources of information for resources that are difficult to catalog. 

AutoCat (free) -

RDA-L (free) -   (NOTE: You must be an ALA member with authentication to access.)

Any of the ALCTS lists (Note: Must be an ALA member with authentication to access.)

Library of Congress Listservs (including approved headings) -

 Music Library Association (National / International Level) - (Free to receive, but must be an MLA member to post.)

Local Practices

For donations - indicate with 541 field set to private note.

For multiple authors - can indicate with "by John Doe [and 5 others]." NOTE: The number will be expressed in numeral form.

The following collections have custom call numbers: Children's literature, ELP, and DVDs. Please see Heather Fisher, Metadata and Catalog Librarian, should you have any questions.

Element 245 (Title and statement of responsibility) - |h will remain in e-book, sound recording, and video recording records. All others will be deleted per RDA standards.
