ENGL 111 Library Session Learning Outcomes

 

1. Students will identify keywords used from searching library databases that represent a research topic and use these keywords to find useful information sources.

-recognize the value of browsing and other serendipitous methods of information gathering
-exhibit mental flexibility and creativity

 

2. Students will narrow, broaden, or modify their search, research topic, question or thesis based on initial search results.

-understand that first attempts at searching do not always produce adequate results
-design and refine needs and search strategies as necessary, based on search results
-utilize divergent (e.g., brainstorming) and convergent (e.g., selecting the best source) thinking when searching
-match information needs and search strategies to appropriate search tools

3. Students will reflect (responding to questions) on sources selected from relevant search results and address/recognize as to how/why the selected sources speak to their topic, question or thesis.

4. Students will identify purpose and distinguishing characteristics of different types of information sources.
