JOB DESCRIPTION – [07-19-10]

 

JOB TITLE: Reference Desk Student Assistant

 

DEPARTMENT:  Melvin J. Zahnow Library, Reference Services

 

JOB SUMMARY: From the Reference desk, assist library users with basic software and hardware troubleshooting in the Reference lobby area and computer instruction lab (Z 111), as well as answer informational, directional and basic reference inquires in person, by telephone and IM/Chat. Assist Reference librarians with clerical tasks and special projects.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

-     While at the Reference desk assist library users with informational, directional and basic reference inquiries under the supervision of a Reference librarian in person, by telephone and IM/Chat.

-     Assist students with basic microcomputer software questions (e.g., MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Corel Word Perfect, etc.) as well as hardware needs (e.g. printers, scanners, etc).

-     Learn new computer technology as it becomes available in the library.

-     Refer students to a Reference librarian if the student has questions about finding information, doing research, etc.

-     Refer students to the Student Technology Center for complex software questions or introduction to new software applications.

-     Perform clerical tasks as requested by Reference librarians (such a gathering statistics, checking online access to electronic resource, etc.)

-     Work on special projects as needed.

-     Respond appropriately to situations without direct supervision.

-     Report to work based on an established work schedule.

-     Work in a friendly manner with co-workers, library staff and supervisors.

-     Greet library patrons, answer the telephone, and appropriately record messages.

-     Replace supplies as needed, such as toner cartridges & paper in printers.

-     Work in a safe manner, adhering to departmental guidelines and training.

-     Dress appropriately for work/job requirements.

 

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Supervision is received from the Head of Reference Services with functional supervision exercised by Reference Librarians (if applicable). 

 

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

-     Work will be primarily performed inside

-     Work will be performed around computers

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

-     Ability to assist students with basic word processing, V-Space and other software applications

-     Excellent written and oral communication skills

-     Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

-    Enrolled in SVSU classes as a regular student (excludes guest students)

-     Fall and winter: at least 6 credit hours each semester

-     Spring/summer: at least 6 credits total or be pre-registered for at least 6 credits for the upcoming fall semester

 

 

ADDITIONAL MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

     Ability to work with a diverse student population and various on and off campus professional populations

     Ability to work independently and on teams including under occasional pressure

     Ability to mentally and physically perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation.
